Stephen Daniels

Stephen M. Daniels was the founding chairman (chief judge) of the United States Civilian Board of Contract Appeals. He served for thirty years as a judge on that board and one of its predecessors, the last twenty-five as chairman, hearing and deciding thousands of disputes between federal government agencies and their contractors.

Since his retirement in 2017, Steve has been active in non-profit organizations in his Capitol Hill neighborhood. He serves as a board member and treasurer of Chiarina, a highly-acclaimed chamber music group; the Capitol Hill Community Foundation, a supporter of local organizations which engage in the arts (including The Thirteen), social services, school- and youth-based programs, and neighborhood beautification; and Barracks Row Main Street, a local business development group.

Steve is a graduate of Yale University and Yale Law School. He is married to Maygene Daniels, the retired chief archivist of the National Gallery of Art who is now also active in community activities on Capitol Hill. They have two children: Edward, a criminal court judge in New York City, and Leah, an entrepreneur who created and operated for seventeen years a retail kitchenware store on the Hill.
