Denique has performed various operatic scenes and roles with vocal ensembles throughout the United States, Western Europe, South Africa, and Australia.

Commenting on her fellowship, Isaac stated, “I’m excited about the Vocal Fellows Program and increasing representation in the field of choral music with a face that looks like mine.”

Shaina Martinez (she/her)

Lyric soprano
Master of Music | Manhattan School of Music

Shaina Martinez has received awards from the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist Competition, Eisenberg-Fried Concerto Competition and many more. Other programs attended include Martina Arroyo’s Prelude to Performance, Grant Park Music Festival’s Project Inclusion Fellowship, and Florida Grand Opera.

“I am excited to dive into choral music and make beautiful sounds with The Thirteen, where stellar musicianship is the standard,” stated Martinez.

Isiah Maxey (he/him)

Isiah Maxey (he/him)

Baritone
Master of Choral Conducting | Cincinnati Conservatory of Music

Isiah Maxey is currently an Albert C. Yates Fellow at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he studies Choral Conducting with Joe Miller and Brett Scott. As a classically trained baritone, Maxey performed with choral ensembles in Florida, including Festival Singers of Florida, Voci del Cuore, and All Saints Episcopal.

Upon receiving acceptance to the program Maxey stated, “I’m excited to participate in an organization with a purpose of tackling important issues in our world. I’m also thrilled to make music at a high level while connecting with professionals in my field.”

Opal Clyburn-Miller (they/them)

Tenor
B.A. in Music | St. Mary’s College of Maryland

Derrick Miller has lead various solo performances including Ariel Ramírez’s Missa Criolla, Beethoven’s An die Ferne Geliebte, Gustav Holst’s Psalm 84, and Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb. Derrick will complete their certificate in American Contemporary music at UMBC, studying with Tony Arnold, in December 2021 and regularly performs as soloist and chorister in various churches in the D.C. metro area.

Miller stated, “It’s wonderful that an organization like this exists so close to Maryland, and it is a privilege and honor to call these individuals my colleagues.”
